New fire chief takes helm in Cary

Mike Cooper was recently pinned at the latest Town Council meeting in Cary as the new fire chief, replacing Allan Cain who became the public safety director in Cary.

Cooper joined the Cary Fire Department in 2005 after having been in fire service for 18 years. He started his career in the Durham Highway Fire Departments as a teenager and was its fire chief for six years. He is a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer Program of the National Fire Academy.

After 31 years in fire service, Cooper feels that the profession has become data-driven, as response times are more precisely measured and geographic information systems are more widely used. This greater use of technology enables the department to better evaluate risk and determine the needed level of response.

Cooper plans to improve the safety and health for the department’s firefighters. He is looking to better monitor exhaust inhalation and remove fire residue on clothing which can be carcinogenic.

Cooper added that the fire department and the community are really engaged with each other. He said the people in the town care about and take care of each other so that there is a good relationship between the town and the department.
Banner printing companies can be used to create displays and other materials informing the community about such appointments.
