First Wegmans in NC may locate in Cary
One of the top U.S. supermarket chains, Wegmans Food Markets, is exploring the possibility of opening its first store in North Carolina opposite Cary Towne Center.
The family-owned, 88-store company, has its eye on a site owned by a shopping center developer, Columbia Development Group LLC, based in Columbia, South Carolina. According to Jo Natale, a Wegmans spokesperson, a letter of intent has been signed by the company and lease negotiations are in progress for the 90-acre tract located north of the well-known mall. The multi-functional development could revitalize the area surrounding the Cary Towne Center, the future of which is uncertain due to the loss of some anchor and small tenants.
Wegmans is headquartered in Rochester, New York, and has stores in that state as well as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. The family-owned company’s expansion plans for the next few years will require a minimum of 13 sets of customized stationery for the additional stores.
Consumer Reports ranked Wegmans as the No. 1 supermarket in the U.S. in its 2015 annual customer survey. The chain, one of 68 on the survey, received high marks for baked goods, freshness, and overall shopping experience. Along with Whole Foods and The Fresh Market, Wegmans also scored highly when reviewers looked at the quality of its produce.
