Cary opens a new site for food recycling

Cary now has a second drop-off site for the recycling of food waste.

Located in Mills Park, the site has unlocked bins to easily drop off waste, as well as a Biodegradable Product Institute bag dispenser. There is no cost to residents for use of the site, and it accepts the same items as those accepted at the Citizen’s Convenience Center. These items include coffee grounds and filters, cooked and raw scraps of food, paper towels, napkins and paper plates, tea Bags, pet food, and pizza Boxes, among others.

These food scraps and waste are composted locally at a commercial facility. Some of the finished compost will be used in the fields at the Good Hope Farm in Cary. The town has had much success with the pilot project at the Citizen’s Convenience Center, having collected 80 tons of food in its one year of operation.

Danna Widmar, assistant town manager, said that Cary continues to develop long-term strategies and is taking a practical approach to making the disposal of food waste accessible and easy for its citizens.

Toward Zero Waste and the town of Cary are collaborating on promoting this new facility with online workshops and onsite education. Flyer printing can be used so that residents become aware of when such workshops are being offered. There will also be volunteers at the site at Mills Park to help residents with tips and guidance on using the facility.
