The town of Cary is currently planning for future transportation options that will include improved bus service and a commuter rail to connect the town to Durham, Research Triangle Park, and Raleigh.
The transit administrator for Cary, Kelly Blazey, said that the current depot is too small to expand it for additional services as the train platforms do not meet the Amtrak standards and there is no room to lengthen them. The plan is to add a rapid transit line between Cary and Raleigh.
The plan will include a multi-modal transit center that is hoped to contribute to the development of the downtown area. It would not only serve as a place where trains, buses, and other modes of transportation come together, but will also become a destination in the center of the town. It would be located just west of the current depot.
Brochure printing can provide more details on such plans that will enable feedback from the community.
The center will have straight passenger platforms 1,000 feet long on both of the two rail lines that converge downtown. There will also be more space for rideshare drop-offs and pick-ups, parking, busses, and larger waiting areas for commuter rail and Amtrak passengers. Blazey added that the new site provides potential for private development that could include retail, offices, and apartments that would benefit by being in the downtown area and close to mass transit.
