Cary implements new technology to handle emergency calls

RapidSOS Alarm Call Automation, a new artificial intelligence (AI) technology, is being tested by the town of Cary to help determine whether 911 calls are false alarms or fake calls.

This technology can transcribe emergency calls and send these transcriptions to the staff at the Cary Communications Center to be monitored by staff. If the incident is a shotting, burglary, or of a serious nature, it is immediately elevated to a live dispatcher.

Local print shops can help inform residents about such technology and its impact on the community with flyers and other printed materials.

The technology is slowly being rolled out by RapidSOS. It has been found by the National Association of State 911 Administrators that over half of the emergency response centers across the country are facing a shortage of staff. This comes at a time when there is a population boom in Cary, which has the seventh largest population in the state.

Doug Workman, supervisor of the Cary Communications Center, said that with population increases, there are increases in emergency calls. He said that this technology will be able to handle the processing of calls, rather than the staff, which will enhance the ability of the staff to better handle the real emergency calls.

There are no plans to reduce the staffing levels in Cary should there be any problems or issues with the new technology.
