Cary earns special award for sustainability efforts

The United States Composting Council has awarded the town of Cary the Organics Diversion Program of the Year Award.

This award is one of the most prestigious honors in the field. It recognizes outstanding achievements in the composting industry and marks the significant accomplishments of the town in waste diversion and sustainability.

News of such special awards and their meaning for a town can be made known with flyer printing.

The nomination of the town of Cary for this award was made by Srijana Guilford, waste strategy and community impact consultant, and Jenna Kostka, festivals and events supervisor.

Two important initiatives, the Spring Daze and Lazy Daze festivals of the town, as well as the food drop-off program that runs all year, were the path to earning this award. These programs are designed to promote sustainability, reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills, and engage residents.

Kostka said integrating composting into the two festivals has been a significant part of the city’s strategy to engage the community and educate people about the benefits of composting and waste diversion. Last year, these festivals resulted in a compliance rate among food vendors of 95%. All organics and other related waste are transformed into compost, which is rich in nutrients and some of which is used at the Good Hope Farm in Cary to support urban agriculture.
