Last month, a site plan and special use permit were approved by the Cary Town Council in a vote of 3-2.
The permit is for a public storage facility that is to be located along North Carolina 55. The site is close to the Carpenter Historic District.
The proposed facility, which would be a mini-storage complex, will contain six buildings, including a two-story structure. The whole complex will offer a total area of approximately 135,000 square feet.
Although some council members expressed concern about the proposed location of the facility, others found it an appropriate place for such use, since the tract is a narrow piece of land that lies between railroad tracks and a highway.
Councilman Don Frantz said a storage facility would not generate much traffic, arguing that he believes there is a demand for storage facilities like the one proposed for this site, because Cary is growing rapidly, with new families moving in and new homes going up. The newcomers also bring a lot of items they need to store, which would make them good customers for the new enterprise.
As the facility nears completion and gets ready to open, operators could work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for Cary residents announcing the event. They might also include a coupon that would enable people to save on their first month's fee.
