The Montana Natural History Center in Missoula will be holding a two-part class in February to introduce beginners to birding.
Birding for Beginners is a program where people can learn about local birds and how to properly bird watch. Attendees will learn to identify 25 species of birds that can be found in grassland, forest, and riparian habitats. The first portion of the course will take place in the classroom, while the second part brings students to Maclay Flat for an in-field experience. Those in the program are asked to wear a mask while indoors. Attendees should also bring a journal and something to write with.
The instructor for the birding program is Elena Ulev, who is a Certified Interpretive Guide who teaches classes for the Dickinson Lifelong Learning Center and Montana Natural History Center. She earned a degree in Wildlife Biology and has a decade of experience working as a wildlife, botany, and hydrology technician. Ulev has seen more than 171 bird species in Missoula County. Experts like Ulev can give Business Cards to local venues interested in guest speakers.
The birding course will take place on Wednesday, February 9 and Saturday, February 12. The cost for members of the Montana Natural History Center is $50, while non-members can pay $55. The number of bird watchers in the class will be limited to 12.
