St. Louis's Muny continues to wow theater lovers

The beloved Muny, which stands for the Municipal Theatre Association of St. Louis, is now in its 97th season.

According to recent reports, the theater is going strong, continuing to please audiences and performers alike. The Muny presents musicals in an outdoor amphitheater in Forest Park. The venue seats 11,000, and makes about 1,500 seats in the back nine rows free to patrons on a first-come-first-served basis, making The Muny very unusual.

The originally unnamed theater first opened in 1914 with a production of Shakespeare's As You Like It. The venue was named in 1919 and has been The Muny ever since.

The theater opened its current season with My Fair Lady, and will present Hairspray next. Based on the 1988 John Waters film, the show is set in Baltimore in 1962, where plus-size teenager Tracy Turnblad has one dream: to dance on a popular TV program. When she makes it, she is no longer an outcast, but a star. However, Tracy hates it that the program isn't integrated, and uses her new status to work for equality. The show features pop tunes and dance numbers, and is suitable for almost all ages, although parents can check with the theater for its guidelines.

Hairspray opens June 23rd and runs through to the 30th. All performances start at 8.15pm.

Theater managers could work with a banner printing company to create Signs that celebrate and publicize the production.
