St. Louis ready to jazz it up

Jazz lovers can enjoy an exceptional performance that will also raise funds for a worthy cause.

Friends of The Sheldon are making a streaming event available that will help support the educational programs at The Sheldon, which serves more than 30,000 students annually.

The artists are the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Septet. The ensemble is led composer and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, with Obed Calvaire on drums, Carlos Henriquez on bass, Dan Nimmer as pianist, Elliot Mason on trombone, Ted Nash playing alto saxophone, and Walter Blanding on tenor sax.

The group will be performing “The Democracy Suite,” which Marsalis has written since the pandemic began. The work is his response to the economic, social, and political issues the nation is facing. The suite is an instrumental “discussion” of the current situation, as well as his hope that working together, the nation could create a future that is better for everyone.

The concert was filmed at New York City's Frederick P. Rose Hall, following protocols for safety, testing, and cleaning.

The date of the event is November 15, and the stream starts at 7:00 pm. The concert will be available for 24 hours afterwards. A link will be sent a minimum of two hours before the stream is scheduled to start, so patrons must provide a valid email address.
