St. Louis television station KMOV partnered with Shriners Hospitals for the ‘Our Heroes for Kids’ telethon on March 31.
The event is an annual fundraiser, and this year’s raised twice as much money as 2015’s. Last year, participants raised $31,000, but by noon this year, the total was already greater. By the end of the telethon, the total raised was $63,904
Every dollar will go directly back into the St. Louis community, and in particular, the Shriners Hospitals for Children—St. Louis.
John Glass, the hospitals' administrator, said the patients they treated in St. Louis, all children, came from 35 states. In addition, the Shriners have 22 other installations throughout the country, and run two international hospitals – one in Mexico City and the other in Montreal.
In the St. Louis facility, the focus is on orthopedics. Treatments range from fitting prosthetics to more complex operations, such as surgery to correct spinal defects. The hospitals' public relations manager, Max Montgomery, says Shriners treats the children no matter whether or not their families can pay. It also makes sure families have lodging, and transportation to and from the facility. Shriners often volunteer to do the driving.
Shriners might consider working with a postcard printing company to create a card for a targeted Mailing of locals, asking them to look out for the telethon next year.
