A new theater group has joined the colorful St. Louis theatrical scene, as Cocktails and Curtain Calls prepares to launch a series it calls ‘Bard in the Bar’.
According to a May 19 news article, the company will perform what its artistic director, Nick Henderson, calls “guerrilla” theater, by taking both actors and audience on a pub crawl through some of St. Louis's favorite watering holes—all while performing ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’.
Henderson says he looks forward to having a lot of audience participation in the play. The first effort, called ‘A Midsummer Night's Pubcrawl: 5 Acts, 5 Bars’, will feature six actors, complete with costume and makeup, performing the play while they, and the audience, move from bar to bar in various neighborhoods.
Actors and audience members will crawl through Hammerstone's, Henry's, Molly's, Grizzly Bear, and Nadine's, all in the Soulard area, on May 27 and 28. On June 3 and 4, they will be on Cherokee Avenue, at 2720, Melt, Whiskey Ring, Fortuneteller, and Foam.
Participants will crawl through the Grove area (Attitudes, 4121, Handlebar, Just John, and Atomic Cowboy) on June 10 and 11. Single shows are planned for Molly's on May 26, June 2, and June 8, and also at 4121 on June 1 and June 9. The fun starts around 7:00 pm, with details and tickets on the theater website.
