Major League Soccer could come to St. Louis

Although an official announcement has yet to be made, it appears a Major League Soccer team might call St. Louis home.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, along with station KMOX, believe the announcement will be made soon. The Post-Dispatch reports that MLS4TheLou, which is the group working to bring a Division I club to the city, has been successful. Anonymous sources say the deal is done, but no public announcement has been made. Tom Ackerman of KMOS said a source agrees with this news.

The club coming to St. Louis would be one of the few professional sports teams in the country the majority of whose owners are women. A new stadium seating 22,500 is expected to be constructed near the new St. Louis Aquarium. Drawings of the proposed venue were released earlier this year. Soon after that, the soccer league said it would be expanding to 30 teams, with Sacramento and St. Louis in the lead to have one of the teams in that city.

The deal has been in the works for some time. In 2015, Major League Soccer officials announced they would expand the league, but St. Louis didn't appear to be interested until a year later, when several businesses executives began to take a serious look at the idea. They put together a plan, and it appears to have paid off.
