Audience favorite set for St. Louis screening

One of the best-loved musicals of all time, 'The Sound of Music', is coming to St. Louis.

The show will play at the Fabulous Fox Theatre, under the direction of Jack O'Brien, who has won the Tony Award three times.

For this brand new production, O'Brien has rethought the starring role of Maria. O'Brien says he saw the legendary Mary Martin in the role, when she was a Broadway star. She was also 46 years old at the time. However, when he read the play again, it occurred to him that Maria is not a woman in her 40s, but a girl probably only a few years older than Liesl, the eldest Trapp daughter. With this in mind, he decided not to cast a major star, but someone who is just starting out in the theater. The role thus went to Kerstin Anderson, who is currently a student at Pace University.

‘The Sound of Music’ opens April 26 and runs through May 8, but tickets are on sale now. Performances begin at 7:30 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays, with matinees Saturdays at 2:00 pm and Sundays at 1:00 pm. There are two other performances scheduled, with one on May 1 at 6:30 and a second on May 5 at 1:00 pm. Tickets start at $30.

The theater will no doubt want to work with brochure printers on a program for the show.
