Lyda Krewson, the mayor of St. Louis, along with other federal and state officials, recently signed the transfer in a ceremony at the Central Library. Mayor Krewson personally thanked Otis Williams, the Executive Director of the St. Louis Development Corporation, whose efforts made the transfer a reality. As major installations such as this are developed, they will need to work with Stationery printers for the appropriate Letterheads.
NGA West is projected to cost $1.75 billion and will create more than 1,300 jobs for workers in St. Louis. Congressman Lacy Clay, who represents Missouri's First District in the U.S. House of Representatives, says the NGA West project brings hope to a neighborhood that has been historically neglected.
Clay said, the development represents a:
“powerful, transformative measure of economic justice. The new NGA site is just across the street from the giant federal failure of Pruitt-Igoe.”
The Pruitt-Igoe housing projects were built in 1954, but stood for only twenty years before being razed, due to decay and problems with discrimination.
Now, according to Clay, the NGA project will become a symbol for the area, an indication the city will not ignore north St. Louis or:
“treat historic black neighborhoods as expendable.”
