St. Louis learning center offers art workshop

The Thomas Dunn Learning Center in St. Louis will be hosting a workshop in August to teach people how to work with clay.

Clay Basics is a two-day art class where participants can become more familiar with the techniques used in ceramics. The session will introduce students to hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling, and working with slabs of clay. Attendees can also try experimenting with throwing clay on a pottery wheel in the class.

Sonia Slankard will be the instructor of the art course. She is an artist-in-residence at the Thomas Dunn Learning Center and has been working as the creative director at the Kismet Creative Center since 2014. Slankard has also studied art therapy at Webster University and once worked at the STL Puppetworks.

The learning center was initially created in 1930 a called the Thomas Dunn Home for Working Boys, named after its creator. The facility offers many public programs, such as teen summer camps and exam tutoring services. The venue contains a community garden and is used as the base for the Southside Youth Council.

The art lesson will be held on August 1 and August 29 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The price of attending both sessions will be $10. Community centers that organize art courses such as this may use poster printing to promote their workshops.
