Soldiers Memorial to be renovated

On November 11, the City of St. Louis signed an agreement with the Missouri Historical Society, whereby the society will be responsible for the Soldiers’ Memorial Military Museum.

The society will also take the lead in a $30m renovation, which will including cleaning the building’s exterior, as well as its sculptures. The goal of the new agreement is to create a facility that is state-of-the-art and honors the military, veterans, and families of military personnel.

The project is still being finalized, but one main goal is to maintain the building’s historic and architectural integrity.

The building was designed by Mauran, Russell & Cowell, a St. Louis architectural firm, and Walker Hancock, a St. Louis sculptor, created four groups of monumental sculptures to flank the doorways. The site was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936, and the museum opened in 1938.

The planned renovations include adding a HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system of museum quality, adding interior storm windows to minimize light that could damage artifacts, adding a second elevator, and bringing the building into compliance with regulations. The memorial will close in early 2016 for the renovations, and is slated to reopen some time in 2018.

Memorial management could develop Brochures to describe the renovation process, which could be used to build anticipation for the reopening.
