Renovated station to feature a light show
St. Louis' Union Station is being renovated and will once again be a grand terminal with almost everything anyone could want, including trains.
Lodging Hospitality Management has bought the station and will spend more than $66m on renovations, one of which is a $1.6m light show in the Grand Hall. About 30 short videos, most of which are animated, will play in rotation on the ceiling of the Grand Hall, which is 65 feet high.
Union Station, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was opened in 1894, and was one of the country's busiest passenger railroad terminals for many years. It was briefly restored in 1985 and, in 2012, Lodging Hospitality Management bought the property and its adjacent hotel, which has 539 rooms. LHM plans to invest approximately $60m in renovations that will include adding a “family entertainment” spot to the existing retail space, and installing a Ferris wheel in the parking lot.
The hotel renovation will be finished in June, and meeting rooms in the terminal's exhibit space have already been in use. In addition, chartered trains will operate from the station once more, taking sports fans on excursions to see games in Chicago and Kansas City.
This building should be a huge tourist draw, so LHM could consider working with a postcard printing company to make up cards to sell as souvenirs.
