A project that has been on the drawing board for 25 years is about to come to fruition.
Shriner's Children's Hospital is almost complete, and is set to open soon in midtown St. Louis.
John Gloss, the hospital administrator, revealed the length of time that has been devoted to the project, and said the Shriners spent $50m to build the hospital. Gloss also noted that while this hospital is not as large as the old one, is has more features designed to make a patient's stay more pleasant.
Among the amenities are rooms where a patient's family members can stay to be near the child undergoing treatment. Some of the floors and walls where patients walk are interactive to some degree. Gloss called the hospital “very state of the art” and exciting.
The Shriners are planning to dedicate the building with a ceremony. Doug Maxwell, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Dale Strauss, the Shriner's Imperial Potentate, are hosting the event, and opening the building for tours. Parts of the building that are normally not open for viewing, such as patient-family quarters and operating rooms, will be featured.
The ceremony is set for Sunday, May 17, between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm, and the public is invited. The hospital opens to patients June 1.
