Ameren seeks to unite St. Louis

Ameren, one of the largest corporations in St. Louis, wants to help bring people throughout the region together.

The organization has introduced a program it calls ‘Discussion Across Differences’ to promote conversations about inclusion and diversity.

Missouri State Highway Patrol captain Ronald Johnson says he thinks the program will “make a big difference” in dealing with racial problems in the area and throughout the nation. He says it is about everyone working together to do what they can to solve these issues.

Johnson came to prominence when he worked to bring community members and law enforcement officials together during the Ferguson unrest. Now, he is backing Ameren's effort to provide the training materials it has developed to organizations in the region.

Warner Baxter, who is Ameren's CEO and chairman, said small business that do not have the resources to bring together community leaders can use materials his company provides. He says it is not only businesses, but also community organizations, nonprofits, and schools who can benefit from Ameren's efforts.

The materials comprise a series of five discussion guides and videos that give people a starting point for discussing inclusion and diversity. Ameren used some of the recommendations from the Ferguson Commission when it devised the material.

Ameren officials might consider developing brochures that describe these training materials, and make the booklets available to organizations throughout the area.
