Forest Park to hold balloon race

The Great Forest Park Balloon Race is coming soon.

More than 70 balloonists will be participating. The free two-day event attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year.

The Balloon Glow will start the festivities, and the tethered balloons will be on display after dark. Pilots will be inflating their balloons near the Jewel Box in Central Field at dusk and lighting their burners to illuminate their crafts. The evening will end with a fireworks show.

A food court will be open all during race day as will the Children’s Activity Area. The Area will have pony rides, games, and crafts. Music and other performances will also keep attendees, likely to come from nearby areas like Chesterfield, entertained.

The Energizer Bunny balloon ‘hare’ will be launched at the start of the race and float for a few minutes before the racing balloons ascend. When the hare lands, the other balloons drop Bags of birdseed. The bag of seed that lands closest to the bunny wins the race.

The winner may want to take a picture of their balloon and trophy for later poster printing.

The Balloon Glow will begin in Central Field at the corner of McKinley and Welles Drives in Forest Park, St. Louis. It will begin at 7:00 pm and go until 9:00 on September 16. Prerace activities will begin in Central Field at noon on September 17. The race begins at 4:30 pm.
