New charter school set to open in Plymouth area

The 2019-2020 school year will bring a new charter school to Wayne County, Michigan.

The Ivywood Classical Academy received a charter agreement from Central Michigan University at the beginning of December last year. Thanks to the charter, the school will be able to open its doors and operate starting in the fall.

Where those doors and the rest of the school itself will be remains to be seen. The school has yet to choose a location and is still looking for a property. The charter's board is considering locations in Plymouth, Livonia or Westland.

The charter school would offer a "classical liberal arts education," which would place an emphasis on math, literature, science and history and would focus on teaching the "whole student."

Charter schools that are new to an area can use brochure printing to explain their curriculum and what makes them different to other schools in the area, including other charter schools, private schools, and public schools.

Ivywood is not the first charter school to come to Wayne County. Existing schools include Plymouth Scholar Charters Academy, Grand River Academy, and American International Academy.

Although the charter schools are not part of the public school district, they still receive funding from the state and do not charge tuition to students. The schools receive funding on a per-pupil basis.

When Ivywood does open its doors, it will have space for up to 336 elementary age students (kindergarten through fifth grade). It will add one grade each year until it is a K through 12 school.
