Kalamazoo's Art Hop could come to Lansing

Once a month, Kalamazoo residents enjoy the Art Hop, when local businesses become art galleries for a night, and the concept is now coming to Lansing.

In Kalamazoo, attendees can walk into a retailer, a yoga studio, or a pharmacy and sip some wine while they talk to the artists whose work is displayed in the store. The idea of looking at art in an unusual venue has proven to be both profitable and fun for retailers and artists alike.

The Arts Council of Greater Lansing's executive director, Debbie Mikula, likes the Kalamazoo concept and thinks it could work in Lansing. She is working on efforts to start the Art Hop in the city in the spring of 2016, starting in Old Town, and in East Lansing's downtown. She believes the event could eventually expand to Grand Ledge, downtown Lansing, REO Town, and Williamston.

Lansing has hosted a 'First Sunday Gallery Art Walk' for a long time, and this is an event that will remain in place, according to Mikula. However, a Friday night Art Hop would expand beyond just galleries, and would be heavily promoted and coordinated with merchants in the local area.

The Arts Council could work with brochure printers on a booklet to explain the benefits of bringing the Art Hop to Lansing, and place the brochure in racks in public spaces.
