Developer found for Lansing City Hall

Virg Bernero, the mayor of Lansing, recently announced Beitler Real Estate Services has been chosen to redevelop the Lansing City Hall.

Beitler will also be tasked with renovating the building that formerly housed the Lansing State Journal, turning it into the new Lansing City Hall.

The first step in the project will be for Beitler to buy the former Journal building and refurbish it to function as the Lansing City Hall. It's anticipated that the work of redeveloping the building will take approximately two years. The work on this building would be finished first, before any renovations were started on the current City Hall. This means there would be no need for officials to move into temporary spaces.

In a news release, Mayor Bernero said turning the old city hall into a hotel will increase the number of hotel rooms available downtown, which will in turn attract bigger conventions to Lansing more frequently and help the city continue its transformation. At the moment, however, the plans still need approval from the city council.

Mayor Bernero will leave office December 31, with Andy Schor beginning his first term January 1, 2018. If the matter is not settled before Bernero leaves, Schor has said his administration will continue to study the plans.

Officials might consider working with a newsletter printing company to create a letter for residents, updating them on matters like this, which will have an impact on their community.
