What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

New gym kick started in Bethesda

A local kickboxing and boxing fan has solved the problem of his gym closing by opening up another one of his own.

Ken Gear was happy with his membership at the UFC Gym, located on Cordell Avenue. Then the gym closed, leaving what Gear describes as a “huge void”.

He talked to other potential investors, as well as some of the trainers he knew from UFC Gym, and they have now opened the Bethesda Boxing & Kickboxing Academy. The facility, which comprises 2,000 square feet, was most recently a shoe retailer. Now, the gym has put a section for personal training at the front, and 18 punch bags in the rear. In addition, there are two “peanut punching bags” to enable fighters to increasing their punching accuracy, a speed punch bag, and additional space for various classes in kickboxing, boxing, and other specialties.

In order to make his dream come true, Gear is leaving his position with the government in Washington, D.C., which he describes as “crunching numbers” at his desk. He wants a position that requires marketing, human interaction, and initiative, plus he says he has a passion for fitness.

The Academy, which offered free classes last month, is located at 4940 St. Elmo Avenue. Gear could work with a flyer printing company to develop handouts that advertise the classes.
