Philz Coffee, a chain of coffee shops popular in Silicon Valley, opened its first location in Maryland recently, and chose Bethesda Row for the venture.
The coffee shops have been in business for 25 years, but most of their locations are in San Francisco and the Bay Area, with others in San Diego and Los Angeles. The company plans another location in the area, in Ballston Quarter in Virginia, in addition to its spots already open in Dupont Circle, The Yards, and Adams Morgan – all in Washington, D.C.
Philz is a little different because it does not serve specialty drinks such as pre-brews, lattes, espressos, or blended drinks. Instead, it brews each up to the customer’s specific order. The chain has over 20 customized bean blends available, which means that it could make any one of four million different combinations. In addition to brewing individual cups of coffee, Philz also offers breakfast items, spices, pounds of coffee, and tea.
The new Bethesda Row shop offers 2,535 square feet, and is located on Woodmont Avenue. It plans to operate from 6:00 am until 8:00 pm Mondays through Fridays, and 7:00 am to 7:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The menu includes items such as scones, cookies, muffins, toast, and bagels.
New stores like this offer operators a great opportunity to increase brand awareness by distributing promotional products during their first weeks of operation.
