Mystery fan convention set for Bethesda

Fans of “traditional mysteries” will not want to miss an upcoming event in Bethesda.

Malice Domestic, which was founded in 1989, is a fan convention held every year in Maryland. The event is an homage to the “Traditional Mystery,” which organizers say is probably best typified by Agatha Christie’s works. Unlike police procedurals, or the “hard boiled” detective stories featuring a protagonist like Philip Marlowe, these books have no violence, excessive gore, or explicit sex.

Over 300 authors are scheduled to attend the event, as well more than 200 fans. Honorees are Hank Phillippi Ryan, a television news journalist and author of the Jane Ryland/Jack Brogan, and the Charlotte McNally series; and Ann Cleeves, OBE. Cleeves, who has won numerous awards and had three of her mystery series filmed for television, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The International Guests of Honor are Abir Mukherjee and Vaseem Kahn, and the Amelia honoree is Luci Zahray, known as the “Poison Lady.” A retired pharmacist, she has advised many authors on the best ways to poison their characters. Tonya Spratt-Williams is the Fan Guest of Honor, Barb Goffman is the Toastmaster, and Malice Domestic will be remembering Elizabeth Peters, the author of the hugely popular Amelia Peabody series.

Malice Domestic is set for April 28, 29, and 30 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. Events like this, which bring together people with common interests, are perfect for exchanging business cards.
