Local Macy's helps test new app

IBM has developed an artificial intelligence with its developer partner Satisfi, and has named the platform Watson. Now, the technology giant wants to try out its new app at a few Macy's stores throughout the United States, including the store in Bethesda's Montgomery Mall.

IBM has created a mobile web tool called ‘Macy's On Call’. The app allows customers to use their smartphones to interact with an artificial intelligence platform via Watson. The aim of the process is to allow customers to ask questions in natural language with regard to where specific departments, products, and brands are located, and what facilities and services can be found in which store. They will receive relevant responses in return. The app is based on the thinking that when they are in a brick-and-mortar store, customers are more likely to look to their smartphones for help, rather than seeking out a sales associate.

Macy's says that the system will grow and evolve as it learns about the customers who come to each store, and what questions they ask most frequently. The app is available in both Spanish and English. In addition to the five stores that are testing out ‘Macy's On Call’, which is technology only, five more will give customers the ability to speak with a store employee face-to-face.

Companies like these can benefit by working with newsletter printing companies, which can create materials that explain complex issues in depth.
