What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Furniture company on the move to Bethesda

Hardwood Artisans, a company based in Virginia that makes furniture to order, is moving to Bethesda.

The company will open in the Woodmont Triangle neighborhood, where it will make tables, beds, kitchen cabinets, and other items requested by customers. The store already has a location in Rockville, Maryland, at Federal Plaza, which will close later this year as the new location ramps up.

After the original owners retired in 2005, Mark Gatterdam and five other craftsmen took over the company. Hardwood Artisans has a production facility and shop in Culpepper, Virginia, but many of its customers are in Maryland, particularly Bethesda.

Gatterdam said the company had considered moving to Bethesda Row, but finally settled on the 4828 St. Elmo Avenue location. He said he knew the location was the right place immediately, even though it is not flashy. Instead, it is a sort of mid-century modern with a lot of glass, and it is away from other “slick” showrooms. However, Gatterdam says these surroundings suit the company.

He adds that the company is committed to working sustainably, and reuses many materials; sawdust goes weekly to a dairy farm for use as compost material and bedding. The new store will open on a limited basis before its official opening, planned for April 2.

Gatterdam and other craftsman could create banners to hang throughout the space to celebrate the occasion.
