What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Dining option moves in to vacant Bethesda building

A new casual dining place—Not Your Average Joe's—is moving into the Georgetown Square Shopping Center in Bethesda.

The space was formerly occupied by a Du-Par's, which had taken over from Hamburger Hamlet. The eatery closed December, 2013.

During the summer, the management company responsible for leasing the store arranged for crews go in and demolish the inside of the space, and remove all the fixtures and fittings left by Hamburger Hamlet. The work, along with a dumpster of debris that sat in the shopping center's park lot all summer, had many residents speculating on what sort of operation would take over the old Hamburger Hamlet spot. They now have their answer.

Not Your Average Joe's was founded by Steve Silverstein, who is the company's CEO. He said in July, 2014, that he was close to agreeing on a lease for the space, which comprises 8,500 square feet. He hopes to have the restaurant up and running by March, 2015. In addition, Silverstein will be seeking a liquor, beer and wine license from the county this month.

The legendary Hamburger Hamlet chain was founded in 1973 by Harry and Marilyn Lewis. The Georgetown location was their first East Coast store.

Silverstein could work with a flyer printing company to create a handout, complete with coupon, to be distributed near the location on opening day.
