What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Bluegrass group coming to Bethesda

A group known for their skill with bluegrass music is coming to Bethesda.

The group now known simply as Nickel Creek was once the Nickel Creek Band, a trio from Southern California. The members comprised Sara Watkins on fiddle, her brother Sean on guitar, and Chris Thile playing the mandolin. During the period from 1993 and 2006, Nickel Creek released six albums, five to moderate success. Their breakout came when Alison Krauss produced their self-titled album in 2000, which went Platinum and received CMA and Grammy nominations. Then, in 2003, they won the Grammy for “Best Contemporary Folk Album” for “This Side,” the album they dropped in 2002.

Nickel Creek decided to take a break in 2007, after dropping a fifth studio album, as well as a complication album. The band members worked on solo projects, but reunited in 2014. A review of the band in concert says:

“These master musicians had the audience in awe from start to finish.”

Monica Martin is on tour with the group. Monica Martin, who started out as the frontwoman of a Baraboo, Wisconsin, alt-folk band called PHOX, is now based in Los Angeles. She takes inspiration from her childhood in Madison.

Nickel Creek will be at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda on March 14. Organizers of events like this will often use poster printing to create suitable advertising for the occasion.
