Bethesda to host fundraiser to send wounded warriors home

Luke's Wings, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., has a mission of arranging those flights at no cost to the service member. The organization is planning a fundraiser in Bethesda to raise money to send wounded warriors home for the holidays.

Service personnel wounded in combat are often treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, but the military pays for just three flights during their course of treatment, which can take years. The average fight costs about $500, and prices can go up during the holidays.

Since 2009, Luke's Wings has arranged and paid for airline tickets for approximately 2,700 wounded people and their family members. Sometimes, it is simpler to fly a family member to their relative than it is to send the patient home. Luke's Wings held its first fundraiser in 2014, and raised over $30,000, which enabled it to fund more than75 flights.

The fundraiser, called ‘Heroes Walk to Fly’, comprises a walk and block party. The first is a 1.5-mile walk down Wisconsin Avenue into downtown Bethesda, and the block party follows, at Euro Motorcars Bethesda. Registration is $35 for adults and $15 for children under 12. Those who cannot make the walk may still sponsor a service member who will walk for them.

The event takes place this Sunday, October 4. Event organizers could work with a banner printing company to create fun and festive banners for the event.
