What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Bethesda starts May on the run

The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad (BCCRS)'s third ‘Rescue 1 Run’ is coming up in a couple of weeks.

The annual event is a fundraiser for the squad, which does not receive operating funds from government agencies at any level. Instead, it raises most of its operating budget—which averages $2m annually—from businesses, foundations, individuals, and a few federal and state grants.

The rescue squad has been saving lives for 76 years, and the races start and end at its station on Battery Lane in Bethesda. The route will take runners through the heart of the area served by the rescue squad, and includes a stretch on Old Georgetown Road. Rockville Pike/355 has steep hills that will challenge race participants.

Finishers will relax and have fun with post-race activities. Volunteers and registered participants will earn an event T-shirt, and all runners will receive a medal certifying that they finished. Overall winners, as well as the winners in each age group, will win gift cards this year.

The Rescue 1 Run, which is an 8K, will take place May 1 beginning at 8:00 am. Two children's fun runs, known as the “ambulance chase” races, will start soon after the Rescue 1 Run begins.

Event organizers could create banners to hang along the route to encourage runners and add to the colorful fun of the day.
