Bethesda residents get ready for the fair

A good old-fashioned county fair, with prizes for animals and contests involving everything from cheese carving to flower arranging, is coming to Gaithersburg, Maryland, about 15 miles from Bethesda, in August.

The Montgomery County Fair is running from today until next Saturday and will draw people from all over the area for a week of fun, food and prizes.

Grandstand events include pro wrestling matches, truck and tractor pulls, monster trucks, and a demolition derby. Among the free events to be held in the arena are a draft horse pull, in which teams of horses compete to pull heavy loads, and a show featuring draft horses and mules. Other free events taking place around the fairgrounds are racing pigs, magicians, talks by agricultural experts, a hypnotist, and the ‘Grizzly Experience’, in which fair-goers can get up close to a grizzly bear.

There are also a number of competitions on the agenda, including contests for the best home-made wine, the best cake, and the best Christmas tree. There will be a number of contests for cattle growers, including a 4-H Beef Breeders’ Show, as well as open shows for Hereford, Angus, and Shorthorn varieties of cattle.

Fair organizers could work with brochure printers to create a handout to be given away at the fair that includes a list of events and a map.
