Bethesda hotel gets a new look

The Bethesda Marriott has been redesigned after the company got feedback from travelers about what they liked—or did not like—about staying in hotels.

The hotel tore out carpets, traditional closets, and desks, and replaced them with hardwood floors, open shelving and closets, and a small table that can be moved, so that visitors can work on it either from the bed or the couch. There are a number of electrical outlets and USB ports in the rooms, so it is easy for people to plug in and recharge electronic devices.

The rooms have an open feel with their hardwood floors, artwork, and a neutral color palette. Metal and wood finishes complement and blend with softer surfaces. In addition, Marriott received comments that travelers often did not unpack, for fear they would leave items behind when they checked out. This led to the concept of open shelving and a space to hang clothes in plain sight. Two drawers under a bench provide closed storage for those who prefer to keep their items from view.

To make the rooms feel even more spacious, traditional bathroom doors have been replaced by sliding barn doors, and some of the bathrooms now have rain showers into which guests can walk. The baths have been given a spa-like feel.

Establishments like this can benefit if managers work with brochure printing companies to create illustrated brochures that show the hotel's amenities.
