Bethesda gets set for international film festival

Filmfest DC, a 28-year-old festival normally held in the nation’s capital, will screen some of its films this year in Bethesda.

This will be the first time the 10-day event has moved out of DC, but Tony Gittens, the festival’s director, said he felt it would be interesting to extend these films to Bethesda, since studies have shown a number of festival-goers regularly come from Bethesda to the District to take part.

Filmfest comprises approximately six U.S. premieres and as many as 70 foreign films, and this eclectic mix should appeal to Bethesda residents, says Gittens. He notes that Bethesda has a “very strong film community” that is also diverse and tolerant. Gittens believes it is this openness that makes the city special, and why its residents respond so well to many different films.

Filmfest will show 14 of its 70 foreign films at the Landmark Theatres Bethesda Row cinema, from April 21 -24; the entire festival runs from April 17 - 27. Further information about the films are on Filmfest DC’s website.

Gittens could work with brochure printers to create a handout for filmgoers that lists the films and a synopsis of each. He has also hinted to Bethesda Now that this could be the festival’s final year, so he might also work with the printers to devise a fundraising appeal to incorporate into the brochure.
