What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Bethesda deli adds outdoor bar and patio

The only Jewish-style deli in Bethesda, Heckman's Delicatessen, which opened in May, 2014, recently opened an outdoor bar and patio.

Heckman's will soon begin promoting The Sideline, an outdoor drinking and dining space that seats 28, and is located in an alley connected to the deli. Erik Heckman, who owns the deli, says his customers often use the alley, but now the space will have a name, a new roof, two flat-screen television sets, space heaters, and its own branding.

Heckman says he always intended on having an outdoor area, but needed to find the right components. He made the decision to invest in the space despite poor weather, and the idea has proven popular.

Patrons of The Sideline can still order from the restaurant's full menu, but there is also a happy hour menu, as well as small dishes more usually found at a bar. Heckman wants the patio to be somewhat different from the operation of the deli proper, and though he stops short of calling it a sports bar, he acknowledges the two TVs give it a sports bar feeling.

Heckman notes that the patio's business is increasing, and he hopes the trend will continue. He says it is mostly a question of making sure people know the patio is there.

Heckman might work with a flyer printing company on a handout, containing a coupon, to be distributed near the deli.
