What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Bethesda bar on the move

Tommy Joe's, a popular bar in Bethesda, is moving to a new location on Norfolk Avenue and leaving its Montgomery Lane space.

Alan Pohoryles, who owns Tommy Joe's, will join with the Robert Wiedmaier Restaurant Group to move the restaurant and bar to its new spot. Urban Heights formerly occupied the space.

In order to relocate, Tommy Joe's will close in mid-February, then reopen later in the month or in early March, on Norfolk Avenue, at 7940. The establishment is a sports bar, and this is a concept the owners intend to continue.

Frank Skull, who is with the Wiedmaier organization, believes Urban Heights did not do good business at lunchtime, but he felt a sports bar would be appealing to more people looking for a space to hold events like wedding activities or birthdays. In addition, the building housing Tommy Joe's is in need of repair, and the restaurant was nearing the end of its lease term, so moving seemed a viable option.

Skull said the remodel will include installing hardwood floors in the dining room and bringing in new TV sets. The restaurant group itself will devise the new menu, which is not yet finalized, but which will include popular Tommy Joe's dishes like wings and burgers.

Once they new location opens, the group might like to work with a flyer printing company to create a handout about the bar.
