Volunteers clean up their local river

As part of this year's Earth Day activities in Baltimore, volunteers worked to clean up trash near along the banks of the Patapsco River, close to the Key Bridge.

Tides had washed all kinds of debris, including plastic bottles, driftwood, and even a damaged crab pot, onto the shore near Key Bridge. A group of volunteers came out to pick up the trash during the “shoreline cleanup” event, which was a part of Earth Day.

While the trash may be little more than an eyesore for motorists crossing the Key Bridge, the Maryland Transportation Authority's Paul Truntich said picking it up would help improve water quality in the river and in the Chesapeake Bay watershed as well. He noted he wanted to see the trash removed before it was blown elsewhere. He also said that authority employees often see people fishing in the area, and much of the trash was probably thrown overboard from the fishing boats.

Approximately 20 volunteers came out for this cleanup, and were supplied with neon Vests, as well as thick gloves, heavy-duty trash Bags, and sticks to use to grab trash. Some people made it a family affair, saying they wanted to teach their children to help their community.

Event organizers could work with a flyer printing company on a mailer, describing the day and asking people to save the date next year.
