Jay Perman, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) recently unveiled plans for a new apartment building near the campus.
The proposed tower would be a slim triangle soaring 30 stories above the intersection of Baltimore Street and Martin Luther King Jr. It would be the newest building to join UMB’s West Side BioPark.
The design is in the planning process and UMB is in contact with potential developers who might be chosen to work on the project, which would offer apartments at the going market rate. The tower is designed with the same brick-and-glass appearance as other buildings on campus, and is part of a west side construction boom that has resulted in four new buildings going up in the area, with more being built. A Proton Center is slated to start accepting patients in approximately 18 months, and a health sciences building was begun in the fall of 2013, with opening scheduled for 2017.
Perman said he had a vision of UBM as a vibrant and easily-recognized urban campus surrounded by a revitalized city. It would be an area that would draw the best students and faculty. In order to invite the best, the university might work with brochure printers to create a mailer for realtors that highlight the location and amenities of the new housing.
