The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) recently broke ground for a community center, to be located in West Baltimore.
South Poppleton Street will be the location of the new center, which will be part of West Baltimore's St. Peter's Church complex. The center, which will cover 20,000 square feet, will replace a 3,000 square-foot center that went into operation in 2015, in the UM BioPark.
The new center will offer programs including computer access, yoga and exercise classes, weekly markets featuring fresh vegetables and fruits, a legal clinic, and training that will enable people to enter the workforce.
A new UMB Health Alliance will also be part of the center, with a program led by both students and faculty members, focusing on preventative health education about issues including diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and mental health. UMB's Police Athletics-Activities League will have a space for its programs for young people, and the center itself will have academic programs designed for high school and middle school students.
Funding for the project is being provided by a grant in the amount of $4 million from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Private donations have totaled another $4 million. Jay A. Perman, the president of UMB, said the center builds on the work the community has done together. Brochure printing can be used to create informative pamphlets about services offered at centers like this.
