Transit fares to increase

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is raising fares soon for a number of services in and around Baltimore.

The MTA operates a number of public transportation systems that will be impacted. Fares will be going up for disability transit service, the subway, light rail, and the buses.

The fare for a single trip will go up by 10 cents, says the MTA, which will raise the price from $1.80 to $1.90 for rides on Mobility Link, the Metro SubwayLink, Light RailLink, and local buses. MTA officials suggest and encourage riders to buy monthly passes, which help riders save money, particularly if they ride every day. The pass price will go from $72 to $74.

The fare increase is required because of the passage of the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Action, which became law in 2013. The act is based on changes in the Consumer Price Index. If the consumer price index (CPI) increased during the two years preceding the action, then the MTA has to raise fares by 10 cents. From 2017 to 2019, the CPI rose 4.2%, mandating the increase in the fares.

State officials noted that fares for MARC trains and commuter buses will be examined in 2020. This review is conducted every five years.

The increased fares go into effect June 23. Poster printing gives officials in situations like this the perfect way to create Signs reminding riders of the upcoming changes.
