Maryland officials recently announced that teens under the age of 18 will no longer be able to use tanning beds.
The Maryland Department of Health made the announcement in a news release, saying that the new law will not allow anybody under 18 years of age to use a tanning device of any kind in Baltimore or anywhere else in the state, which includes tanning beds, tanning booths, or sunlamps. In addition, operators, employees, or owners of tanning facilities will have to verify that anyone who wants to use these devices is of the legal age to do so.
Violations of the law will incur fines and other civil penalties. Poster printing can be used to create Signs reminding patrons of businesses like this of the new law.
The decision was made based on research showing that indoor tanning carries significant risks to health, according to Robert R. Neall, who is the secretary of the Maryland Department of Health. Neall says the consequences of using these devices are more severe the longer they are used, which means the earlier people start using them, the greater the damage may be. He goes on to say that the risk of developing skin cancer increases when tanning devices are used. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, over 400,000 skin cancer cases are caused each year by indoor tanning.
The new law will come into effect as of October 1.
