One of the most historic and popular events in Maryland is now open — the State Fair in Lutherville-Timonium, about 20 minutes from Baltimore.
The fair allowed people to enjoy all the rides for just $20 on August 27, and the official opening took place the following day.
This year, guests will enjoy rides, animals, and plenty of food. Offerings include everything from grilled lamb, to deep-fried Oreo cookies, to peach sundaes. New to the fair this year are a horse festival, hot air balloons, and the Ravens village.
The Maryland State Fair dates all the way back to 1878, when a group of businessman held a successful fair at Lutherville, Maryland. The fair was unable to remain in that location though, because the Northern Central Railway built an extension to its line right in the middle of the grounds.
Despite the setback, the first fair was a success, and the businessmen, who incorporated as The Agricultural Society of Baltimore County, decided to make the fair an annual event, and leased 37 acres on what was then the ‘Timonium Estate’. This fair found itself in competition with the Pimlico Fair, but the two eventually merged to form the Maryland State Fair, which has been going strong since 1906.
The fair runs through September 7, and its organizers could work with a banner printing company to create flags to decorate the fairgrounds.
