Baltimore students benefit from warm gesture

Over 100 students at Baltimore's Garrett Heights Elementary and Middle School got a pleasant surprise recently, when Operation Warm, with the backing of all-star basketball player Malcolm Delaney, handed out brand new winter coats, according to an article on the WJZ-TV | CBS Baltimore website.

Fourth-grader Aniya Brown said that the coat made it feel like it was Christmas, even though it was a little early. Although Delaney was not present—he was in China playing basketball—his family was there to help distribute the coats. His father Vincent said that his son grew up in Baltimore, and has always taken part in athletic events in the city. Vincent added that Malcolm is also concerned about students' academic success, and physical comfort is part of that.

Operation Warm's Lauren Holloway said that giving a new coat to a student:

“…gives them a sense of pride and ownership and they feel accepted by their peers.”

In addition, the coat keeps them warm so they can go outside and play, even on cold days, adding to the good feelings, said Holloway. Events like this are often ideal places for organizations to distribute their Business Cards, asking others to join them.

Delaney and Operation Warm gave away coats four times in Baltimore, bringing them to over 700 students. Vincent Delaney said he knows it is a blessing that his son is a professional sportsman, but he also understands the importance of giving back to Baltimore's children.
