About 155 law enforcement personnel, comprising detectives and officers in the Western, Eastern, and Central districts, Special Operations Sections in the Western and Eastern districts, and members of the Special Enforcement Unit will begin wearing body cameras on October 26, 2015, according to a news article of that date.
Police department officials said that the pilot program is slated to run for 54 days, with cameras being worn either by volunteers, or officers whose commanders designated them to wear the devices. The test period will help the department determine which vendor will eventually supply the cameras.
Three possible vendor teams have been selected from an initial field of ten companies. The three are Taser International, which offers Amazon Web Services coupled with the Axon body camera; Atlantic Tactical Inc., which pairs Microsoft Azure storage with the Vievu LE4 camera; and Brekford Corp., which is working with Panasonic and offers Microsoft Azure storage, but with the Arbitrator camera.
Once the vendor is chosen, the department plans to start equipping its officers with the cameras in February 2016. The process will continue for the next two years, for those department personnel who come in direct contact with the public.
Department officials might consider brochure printing for residents, explaining the new policy and how it will improve policing, as well as community relations.
