Zoo in New Bedford recognized for excellence

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has awarded the Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford accreditation after a detailed application and thorough inspection on site of many days by an independent team of zoological professionals.

There were 32 applications reviewed by the unbiased accreditation commission of the AZA from facilities across the country. The operation of each facility including well-being and animal care; staff training; conservation efforts; veterinary care; guest services; and governance, among other factors were analyzed by inspectors from the AZA. Top officials from the facility were also interviewed at a formal hearing.

The AZA has accredited the Buttonwood Park Zoo every year since 2003. News of such accreditations can be made known throughout a city with flyer printing.

Shara Rapoza, director of the Buttonwood Park Zoo, expressed her honor in once again being accredited by the AZA, which is a testament to the standards, commitment, and pursuit of excellence of the zoo. CEO and president of the AZA, Dan Ashe, said that AZA accreditation is the gold standard around the world for modern zoos and aquariums and reflects a commitment to fostering environments that support the thriving of animals.

The Buttonwood Park Zoo is planning several special events for the fall. The new Animal Ambassador Center will open this month followed by the annual Halloween tradition of Boo at the Zoo.
