Zoo in New Bedford opens new center for animals

The new Animal Ambassador Center at the Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford is now open.

There are 12 new animals in in the Animal Ambassador Center. These include young red fox siblings, a skink, a green aracari, and poison dart frogs. Enhanced habitat space and viewing areas are provided by the new building for the Animal Ambassador Program. This program enables rehabilitated and rescued animals to travel to libraries, schools, and other public events to offer hands-on learning experiences in the greater New Bedford area.

The new center enables the public to see how the program works. The habitats that have been recreated blend into areas for caring for animals so visitors can see how the staff at the zoo train, care for, and enrich the lives of the new animals. Sara Van Wormer, Director of Education of the Buttonwood Park Zoological Society, said that this not only enhances the experience of guests but also enables people to gain a greater sense of shared responsibility and deeper empathy for wildlife conservation.

Brochure printing can be used to provide more details about such programs and new inhabitants of such centers.

The project cost $2.7 million and was made possible by a combination of private and public funding. BayCoast Bank donated $250,000, the Capital Improvement Plan of the city provided some funding, and additional funding came from the Zoological Society.
