Deputy fire chief promoted in New Bedford

Deputy Chief Brian G. Medeiros has been appointed by Mayor Jon Mitchell as the new Fire Chief for the city of New Bedford.

News of such appointments can be made known throughout a city with flyer printing.

Candidates for the position of fire chief in New Bedford are selected based in performance on a civil service examination administered by the state and a process of assessment. The City Council still needs to approve his appointment.

Chief Medeiros has over 30 years of experience with the New Bedford Fire Department (NBFD). He became a firefighter in 1996 and over the years was promoted through the ranks. He became deputy chief in 2022.

His career has included specialized training in many fire safety areas. As chief, he will continue to promote and prioritize ongoing skill-building and education among the members of the NBFD. Since 2019 he has been a member of the Massachusetts Hazardous Materials Response Team. Prior to that he was an instructor at the Fire and Rescue Training Academy in Barnstable. He is an active member of the Fire Chief’s Association of Massachusetts and the Bristol County Fire Chiefs’ Association.

Chief Medeiros expressed his honor to be appointed as Fire Chief. He added that this role is a commitment to leadership, service, and the safety of the residents and each member of the department.
