New Bedford launches program to collect food scraps

A new program for incentivizing the collection of food scraps at curbside for residents of New Bedford is being launched as a collaborative effort of Black Earth Compost, the Greater New Bedford Regional Refuse Management District and the city of New Bedford.

Having scraps of food collected directly which are then transformed into compost full of nutrients is another option for residents to reduce their volume of household trash. Keeping food scraps out of the waste stream not only returns beneficial nutrients back into the earth but also helps extend the lifespan of the Crapo Hill Landfill by reserving space for materials that cannot be managed through other disposal methods.

The first 100 residents to enroll in the program will receive a complimentary starter kit. In the kit are one Sure-Close kitchen countertop bin that holds two gallons; a roll of compostable liners, a six-month supply of these liners, and one wheeled curbside cart that holds 13 gallons; and a bag of potting soil that is one cubic foot in size.

Black Earth Compost will also give households that participate in this program a voucher for a bag of complete compost, one cubic foot in size, that can be redeemed each spring st garden centers participating in the program.

The cost for this varies depending on whether one Signs up for a weekly or bi-weekly collection and on a monthly basis or every six months. Flyer printing can be used to provide more details on such program and on how to sign up for them.
